An annual event is reeling in big bucks for the economy. The Bass Pro Shops Spring Fishing Classic is underway. NewsOn6.com's Nicole Wiseman reports the event kicked off on Friday and already sales are increasing.
"I love to fish, it's my favorite thing; It's my out," said fisherman Chris Johnson.
For fishermen like Chris Johnson, there's no bigger thrill than being on the water.
"The biggest thing is to try to outsmart the fish," said Johnson.
The Bass Pro Shops Fishing Classic is making it easy for Johnson to load up on all the essentials for his next catch, rod, reel, bait, and all.
"They're gearing up for crappie fishing, bass fishing, cat fishing, as well as water sports, boating," said Zach Rawlings with Bass Pro Shops.
The store is offering special sales and bringing in fishing pros from across the area. They're teaching improved fishing techniques.
Thousands of people take it all in every year, not only locals, but also many out-of-state travelers. This means not only are people buying their fishing gear here, they're also staying the night in hotels, using our gas stations, and eating at local restaurants.
"We have people who come here 2, 3, even up to 5, 6 times during this event from out of town. So, it greatly stimulates our economy," said Rawlings.
Bass Pro Shops employees say they're reeling in the big bucks. Every year during the Spring Fishing Classic sales are always at their peak.
Bass Pro Shops' sales double during the classic. Right now they're bringing in tens of thousands of dollars more than during the rest of the year.
It's no wonder sales are booming for a sport that for some is not only a way to relax, but a way to remember times long ago.
"As a little boy my grandfather would take me and hooked me and I've been fishing ever since," said fisherman Bob Holoand.
Fishing brings back memories and the chance to tell all about your proudest prize.
"I'd like to lie, have a big fisherman story, but only eight pounds," said Johnson.
You can bet, he's working on that big catch.
The 2008 Spring Fishing Classic lasts until March 16th. The Bass Pro Shops has new fishing products, live demonstrations, and new tips and techiniques to learn.
