TAHLEQUAH, Okla. (AP) _ Northeastern State's head football coach is stepping down but he's not leaving the school. Athletic Director Eddie Griffin said Monday John Horner's resignation is effective immediately. Griffin says a screening committee will be formed and a nationwide search for a new head coach will begin shortly.
Horner says his decision to quit as head coach is based on personal reasons, which he didn't specify. He says he wasn't able to accomplish all of his goals for the team, but he's proud that the RiverHawks are this year's Lone Star Conference North Division co-champions.
Horner came to NSU as an assistant coach in 1987, became defensive coordinator the following year and was elevated to head coach in 2003.
