OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) -- Lights on the state Capitol dome will be the color purple from dusk Monday until dawn Tuesday in honor of National Alzheimer's Disease Month. Oklahoma has about 77,000 people living with some form or stage of dementia or Alzheimer's disease. Nationally, the figure is about 5.1 million people. It's estimated that every 72 seconds, someone in the U.S. develops Alzheimer's.
Alzheimer's is the seventh-leading cause of death in the country. It's the fifth-leading cause of death for those over age 65.
While there is no cure, drug treatments may help with cognitive and behavioral symptoms. Researchers are looking for new treatments to alter the course of the disease.
