NATIONAL WEATHER FORECAST:

Today across the East, scattered showers and thunderstorms will continue to impact portions of Florida and the Southeast. Periods of heavy rainfall and gusty winds will be possible. A strong cold front will begin to push into the Mississippi Valley and portions of the western Great Lakes. A few strong to severe thunderstorms will be likely by the afternoon hours along the lower Mississippi and the Deep South. Otherwise, fair skies with dry conditions are expected across the remainder of the eastern United States. Afternoon high temperatures will climb into the 50s to low 70s across the Great Lakes and the Ohio and Tennessee Valleys; and the 70s to near 90 across the Northeast, Middle Atlantic, and the Southeast.

Across the central third of the nation, a strong cold front approaching the Mississippi Valley, will trigger showers and thunderstorms across the central and southern Plains, as well as the upper Midwest and lower Mississippi Valley. A few of these storms may reach severe criteria, containing damaging winds and heavy rainfall. Otherwise, expect fair skies with dry conditions across the remainder of the central United States with high pressure in place. High temperatures are expected to reach into the 50s and 60s across the upper and middle Mississippi Valleys and the northern and central Plains; while temperatures across the southern Plains and lower Mississippi Valley will climb into the 60s to low 80s.

In the West, an upper-level trough progressing across British Columbia will continue to produce scattered showers and high elevation snow showers across Washington and the Idaho Panhandle. Light rainfall is expected with this activity. Otherwise, a ridge of high pressure will dominate the weather pattern across the remainder of the West, bringing fair skies with dry conditions. Afternoon high temperatures will reach into the 40 to low 60s across the Rocky Mountains and Great Basin; the 60s and 70s across the Pacific Northwest and Pacific coastline; and the 60s to middle 80s across California and the Desert Southwest.
