OVERLAND PARK, Kan. (AP) -- Sprint Nextel Corporation is announcing plans to add 150 jobs at its call center in Oklahoma City to improve its customer service reputation.

The call center currently has about 700 employees.

Virginia-based Sprint says the new employees will be hired by the end of the year and the company will host a series of job fairs to find applicants.

Sprint has struggled with technical and strategic problems since it purchased Nextel Communications in 2005 and has fallen behind rivals AT&T and Verizon Wireless in attracting and retaining subscribers.

Sprint was roundly criticized this summer when it said it was canceling the contracts of about around 1,000 customers that the company said had made an unreasonable number of calls to customer service.

Some of those customers were later reinstated.
