FORT SMITH, Ark. (AP) _ The Internal Revenue Service says people are impersonating IRS agents in apparent attempts to steal identities. IRS spokesman David Stell says the scams are being reported in central and northeastern Oklahoma and in the Fort Smith, Arkansas, area.
Someone claiming to be an IRS agent called Oklahomans to say they were eligible for $12,000 in federal assistance because of flooding, then asked for a bank account number.
In Fort Smith, Arkansas, callers told residents that they are entitled to refunds, then asked for bank account and Social Security numbers.
Stell says the IRS calls taxpayers at times but not about refunds or other payments.
