AMES, Iowa (AP) _ Iowa State kicker Bret Culbertson tied a school record with five field goals, the final a 28-yarder with 1 second left, and the Cyclones upset Iowa 15-13 Saturday for coach Gene Chizik's first win.

The victory was Iowa State's fourth in five tries at home against the Hawkeyes (2-1). The Cyclones (1-2) have taken seven of the last 10 from their in-state rival.

Bret Meyer found Cyclones third-string quarterback Phillip Bates _ the freshman was playing wide receiver on the play _ isolated with Iowa linebacker Mike Klinkenborg downfield late in the fourth quarter. He hit Bates with a 38-yard pass that put Iowa State on the Iowa 17.

The Cyclones milked the clock, allowing Culbertson a chance to seal the win. Culbertson, who clanked a 47-yard try off an upright earlier in the fourth quarter, split the uprights to complete a remarkable turnaround for Iowa State.

The Cyclones had opened the season with home losses to Kent State and Northern Iowa of the Football Championship Subdivision (formerly Division 1-AA).

Hawkeyes freshman Derrell Johnson-Koulianos gave Iowa State a scare on the final kickoff, taking it back to the Cyclones 26 before being dragged down. Iowa State's fans stormed the field, relishing a second straight upset home win over Iowa.

The Cyclones beat then-No. 8 Iowa 23-3 in Ames in 2005.

Down 12-10 midway through the fourth quarter, the Hawkeyes moved to the Iowa State 8. But a sack and fumble pushed them back, and little-used lineman Christopher Lyle swatted Austin Signor's 33-yard field goal try.

Signor got another chance with 3:38 left and made a 41-yard field goal for Iowa's first lead, 13-12.

Down 12-0 at halfitme, Iowa caught a break a minute into the second half, as Harold Dalton recovered a fumble at the Iowa State 41. On fourth-and-1, Jake Christensen ran a naked bootleg 11 yards for a touchdown.

That seemed to wake the Hawkeyes up. They pulled within 12-10 midway through the third quarter on a 36-yard field goal by Signor.

Iowa State moved the ball early and often, but couldn't find the end zone. Iowa couldn't do anything on offense, though, and Culbertson's four field goals put Iowa State ahead 12-0 at halftime.

Christensen was 12-of-23 for 118 yards for Iowa. Meyer went 21-of-29 for 157 yards, and J.J. Bass rushed for 80 yards for the Cyclones.
