The RiverWalk Crossing in Jenks is set to expand. Work will begin next week on new stores, as well as upscale apartments and condominiums. The News On 6’s Chris Wright reports while the debate continues over whether or not the public should fund development along the Arkansas River, The RiverWalk Crossing, which is privately funded, is already going ahead with its development plans.

"We've had a lot of people come to us wanting, they've asked for several years about condominiums, they would love to have something overlooking the river," RiverWalk developer Jerry Gordon said.

Those people will get their wish. The expansion of the RiverWalk, called Phase Two, will center on a residential area. It will include a 200 unit luxury apartment complex, as well as 50 upscale condominiums. There will also be 125,000 square feet reserved for new shops and restaurants. And just like Phase One, Phase Two will be anchored by an amphitheater.

Work on Phase Two is going to begin as early as next week. They're going to be moving dirt and tearing up the curbs to make room for the new developments. Developer Jerry Gordon says adding permanent residents will ensure that his RiverWalk remains busy even when the temperatures drop.

“Being an outdoor venue as it is, winter times can slow you down, so putting the retail mix and the residential mix together will assure that we'll stay busy year round," Gordon said.

RiverWalk business owners agree, saying they won't mind having customers within walking distance.

"They can just walk down the way and have pizza, they can have fine dining with us, Mexican food, there's concerts on the weekend, it would be a beautiful place to live," said Melting Pot owner Becky Chapman.

Construction is set to begin in the next two months. New RiverWalk residents are expected to be able to move in by next June.

"We're excited about it,” Gordon said. “It's been a long road, we're trying to get over the hump and get it done."

The condos won't come cheap. They will range in price $250,000 to $1 million. Anyone interested in reserving an apartment or condo can call 918-296-7121.
