HUNTSVILLE, Texas (AP) _ A drifter who confessed to killing a Texas woman after he was arrested for stealing cigarettes in Oklahoma has been executed in Texas.

Tony Roach was put to death last night for the 1998 strangling and raping of a woman in Amarillo. Roach was arrested in Guymon about two weeks after Ronnie Dawn Hewitt was found dead in her burning apartment.

Guymon police say he confessed to killing the woman while being questioned about the stolen cigarettes.
