A woman and her child are recovering after their car slammed into an apartment Wednesday morning. It happened on East 15th Place, just east of 15th and Sheridan. Authorities believe the driver had a seizure before the accident. They say that because the car crashed into an apartment complex, and because it happened in the middle of a school zone. The News On 6’s Chris Wright reports everyone dodged a bullet Wednesday morning.
The Dodge Neon suddenly took off across a lawn, and ended up in someone's living room. Neighbors say it was the last thing they expected to see while getting ready for work.
"I just heard this big thumping noise, and it scared the Bee-Jesus out of me,†said witness Mary Moomey. “I ran to my front door because I could still hear the tires of the car spinning, and I was like someone is trying to come through the wall."
Firefighters say the driver, a 33 year-old woman, had a seizure and her foot became stuck on the accelerator. She had just dropped her child off at nearby Jones Elementary school. Another child, a 6-year-old girl, was also in the car. She only suffered minor injuries.
The driver was unresponsive at first, but was revived, and is expected to recover. Firefighters say it's amazing no one was seriously hurt.
"Especially around schools and that sort of thing, where there's a lot of foot traffic, it's quite hazardous," Tulsa Fire Department Captain Larry Bowles said.
Neighbors agree, saying if it had happened later in the day, the accident might have become a tragedy.
"It was very, very lucky that there wasn't a lot of kids out, because it could have been a lot worse," Moomey said.
Only one apartment in that complex suffered serious damage. Fortunately, the owner was not at home.
