NORMAN, Okla. (AP) -- The University of Oklahoma is reporting a decrease in violations of the university's policy regarding alcohol use. OU's Office of Judicial Services says the number of minor in possession citations to students fell by more than 23% from the spring and summer terms of 2005 to the spring-summer terms this year.
The number of public intoxication citations are down by nearly 57% and driving under the influence tickets fell by 43%.
And Norman police say the number of nuisance party calls they received fell by 60% in the past year.
OU adopted the alcohol policy in January 2005 after 19-year-old Blake Hammontree died of alcohol poisoning at a fraternity in 2004.
The policy prohibits alcohol at fraternities, sororities, and residence halls and expands alcohol education programs It also created a mandatory online alcohol awareness tutorial for all new undergraduate students 22 or younger and requires alcohol education seminars to residents in University housing and Greek houses.
