OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) _ Divers recover the body of a high school cross-country runner from muddy, rain-swollen Lake Overholser a day after he vanished while trying to cross a flooded trail.
Divers using sonar equipment pulled the body of Phillip Jones out of the water at 4:32 p.m. in a cove layered with logs, sticks and other debris.
Fire Major Brian Stanaland says Jones was in about 20 feet of water.
The 17-year-old disappeared Wednesday when he and other members of the Putnam City West High School track team were on a routine run and found one of its routes under water. Two other boys managed to get out of the lake.
Members of Jones' family and several Putnam City West students were at the lake Thursday while students at the school talked with counselors.
School district spokesman Steve Lindley says a meeting between Jones' family, a fire department chaplain and school administrators was heartbreaking.
Lindley says school officials may review the guidelines regarding the team's activities.
