NEW YORK (AP) -- Yankees slugger Jason Giambi met with George Mitchell on Friday, becoming the first active player known to talk with baseball's steroids investigator.

Commissioner Bud Selig announced the meeting, but released no details other than who attended. Selig was not present.

Giambi had previously admitted he had a "personal history regarding steroids." The New York designated hitter agreed to the session on June 21 after Selig threatened to discipline him if he didn't speak to Mitchell.

Mitchell, a former Senate Majority Leader, has been investigating steroids since he was hired by Selig in March 2006. Mitchell had no comment on the meeting, his office said.

Giambi has been sidelined since May 30 because of a foot injury. The Yankees do not know when the former AL MVP will be able to play again.

Mitchell and members of his law firm met with Giambi. The star's agent, Arn Tellem, and personal attorney, Brian O'Neill, were present, as were Rob Manfred, executive vice president for labor relations in the commissioner's office, and players' union general
counsel Michael Weiner.
