OSLO, Norway (AP) -- Nobel Peace Prize winner Al Gore says reducing carbon dioxide emissions is essential to the "survival of our civilization." The former vice president made the comments in Oslo, Norway, where he will pick up the prize he won jointly with the U.N.'s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. They were recognized for
efforts to draw the world's attention to the perils of global warming.

In Bali, Indonesia, world governments are meeting in hopes of hammering out a plan for a tougher treaty to replace the Kyoto climate agreement by 2012.

Amid his dire warnings about inaction, Gore expressed optimism about stricter carbon-cutting measures.

He says growing public awareness is spurring what he calls "the world's first people power movement" on climate change. He says this year's Nobel Peace Prize is part of that process.
