NEW YORK (AP) -- Authorities in New York say a window washer is dead after his scaffold fell 40 stories from a skyscraper on Manhattan's Upper East Side. The washer's brother was also on the scaffold and was seriously injured.

Officials say the two were getting onto the scaffolding from the roof of the 45-story building when the platform gave way.

The body of the dead worker and parts of the scaffold landed in a plaza outside the building.

About three hours later, a piece of glass from the top floor where the scaffolding had been attached also fell to the ground. No one was hurt.
