NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) A soldier at Fort Campbell whose hometown is listed as Welty, Oklahoma, and made national headlines for breaking up a fight in California has been found dead in his Army barracks three days after being stabbed in another incident.

Military officials say Private Matthew Nicholson of the 101st Airborne Division was found by another soldier on Sunday.

Nicholson made national headlines for breaking up a fight in California with a man he thought was assaulting two women in Modesto, California. He was arrested and charged with intervening in a fight but the charges were later dropped.

In the latest incident Nicholson was stabbed in the chest last Thursday while trying to break up a fight among several soldiers outside his barracks.

Fort Campbell spokeswoman Cathy Gramling says Nicholson was treated but investigators are still looking into the cause of death.

Nicholson's attorney says the body will be delivered to his mother in California.

The military lists his hometown as Welty which is a small community in north-central Okfuskee County.
