ERICK, Okla. (AP) - A single-car crash on Interstate 40 in western Oklahoma has left three Illinois children dead.
The Oklahoma Highway Patrol says 8-year-old Dylan Hernandez and 9-year-old Darian Hernandez of Aurora, Illinois, were dead at the scene about four miles east of the Texas state line.
Fifteen-year-old Brian Hernandez died after being flown to a hospital in Amarillo, Texas.
Troopers say the three were passengers in a sport utility vehicle driven by their father when he apparently fell asleep at the wheel just after 4 a.m. Tuesday. The SUV went into the median and rolled twice. Every occupant except one was ejected from the vehicle on the first roll, according to a report by Trooper B.J. Payne of the Oklahoma Highway Patrol.
The father, Leonel Hernandez, is hospitalized in Amarillo in critical condition and a fourth son, Oscar Hernandez, is in an Oklahoma City hospital in stable condition.
Troopers say Leonel Hernandez's wife Lorena was the only one not thrown from the vehicle. She is not injured.
