GILLETTE, Wyo. (AP) - A Joplin man was in critical condition after driving off a road and plunging into an open-pit coal mine in Wyoming. Authorities said 28-year-old Bradley Smith fell at least a couple stories in his sport-utility vehicle into the Wyodak Mine on Thursday.

A construction worker in the mine said Smith drove at least half a mile off Wyoming 51 before going over the mine's high wall. The SUV landed on its wheels.

What caused Smith to drive off the road wasn't known. The Wyoming Highway Patrol was investigating.
