OKTAHA, Okla. (AP) -- Muskogee County authorities say a woman was killed when her vehicle collided with a freight train in Oktaha. Seventy-three-year-old Jackqueline McBroom died about 8:30 a.m. Wednesday when a Union Pacific Railroad train struck the car she was driving.
McBroom's son, Jack, says his mother was on her way to pick up a friend so that the pair could go volunteer at a Methodist mission in Checotah.
That friend, Susie Hale, said after her husband heard the crash, she ran up the street and found the wreck.
Oklahoma Highway Patrol trooper Scott Miller spoke with the engineer and another witness. Miller says it looked like McBroom slowed down and was going to stop but instead went across and was hit.
Miller says the train was going between 50- and 55 miles per hour, which he says is well within the upper limit for trains.
