SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Google is getting greener, and trying to help others expand their use of solar and wind power.

The Internet search giant is pouring hundreds of millions of dollars into alternative energy sources in an effort to relieve the environmental strain from its massive computing centers. The aim is to reduce the cost of producing electricity from renewable energy sources.

Google's Green Energy Czar, Bill Weihl (WHYL'), says they initially hope to harvest cleaner-burning power to meet their own needs and then sell to other users or license the technology.

The company's co-founder says Google could make a lot of money from the venture, and reduce the cost of solar power by 25 to 50 percent.

The initiative is being called ``Renewable Energy Cheaper Than Coal.''
