HOMESTEAD, Fla. (AP) -- Jimmie Johnson is the first driver to win back-to-back Nextel Cup championships since Jeff Gordon in 1997 and 1998. Johnson clinched it with a seventh-place finish in the season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway.
Johnson entered the race with an 86-point lead over Gordon and needed to finish 18th or better to beat his teammate. Johnson grabbed five extra bonus points by leading the first lap from the pole, then cruised to another Top-10 finish.
Matt Kenseth edged out Kurt Busch and Denny Hamlin to win the race.
