Schools use Oklahoma-made program to comply with law

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) -- More than 20 Oklahoma school districts are keeping students away from Internet pornography and other objectionable material with a filtering software called EduGate.

Hurricane Technologies LLC based in Oklahoma City sells the software.

Hurricane founder Trey McNeil says the software filters by content, domain names and keywords used in page headers.

EduGate is just one of many software programs available to schools.

Congress passed the Children's Internet Protection Act in 2000, requiring Internet filtering for all public schools and libraries.

About two years ago, the US Supreme Court upheld the law.

Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy wrote this summer that filtering software may be preferable to laws banning pornographic material.
