The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that almost 20,000 more state residents are working now than in January. Mark Hays of Workforce Tulsa says companies are starting to hire again. Hays has seen many local residents lose high-income jobs in the past few years but be hesitant to make drastic career changes. He says Oklahoma often has shortages of skilled trade employees, such as plumbers and electricians. But he says not all laid-off workers are confident in their mechanical skills. Despite the upswing in employment, 55,000 fewer Oklahomans are employed than in record-setting June 2001.
