FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) _ Amtrak officials say the number of riders on its Heartland Flyer is up 18%.

More than 38,000 people rode the train that runs from Oklahoma City to Fort Worth, Texas, and Amtrak says the train is regularly at or near capacity.

Amtrak is asking for at least $1.6-billion in federal funding aid to keep rolling next year.

A House committee and the Bush administration is recommending $900-million. Amtrak says that would shut them down.
