The town of Vinita will hold a public forum tonight, concerning several recent pit bull attacks. A committee could determine whether there should be city-enforced guidelines in place for pit bull owners.

Vinita's city attorney brought a proposed ordinance to last week's city council meeting to address amending the law regarding owning dogs. This comes after a sixth person was attacked in the last eight months. Pit bull victim Patricia McGurik: "I think it should be tied up so it won't attack somebody like it done him or me-it should be tied up in a pen or something like that."

The guidelines would require owners with pit bulls within the city limits to have them registered with the city. It also calls for the dogs to be on a leash and have a muzzle when in public.

In addition, owners will have to show proof of liability insurance to cover injury or death costs as a result of a pit bull attack.
