After a lot of public input and often heated debate, the Tulsa City Council has rejected a controversial annexation request .

Mayor LaFortune wanted to annex 23 square miles of unincorporated land north of Tulsa.
The idea was to bring in millions of dollars in tax revenue and future growth.

Opponents say they wouldn't get much benefits if the city annexes their property.
Annexation opponent Tom Baker said it was " too much, too fast." He said there was no plan and residents were never given an explanation.

Tulsa city councilman called the plan "ill conceived" and said that was the nicest thing
he could say about it. In the end, the council voted 6 to 3 to deny the annexation request.

Some council members still hope for a compromise, and predict at some point the area will be annexed.
