OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) _ Gov. Brad Henry signed a bill Friday that will enable nursing homes, assisted living centers and drug manufacturers to donate unused medication.

The Utilization of Unused Prescription Medications Act, by Rep. Darrell Gilbert, D-Tulsa, authorizes the State Board of Pharmacy to establish a statewide system through which unused medications can be donated for charitable use.

``This act is certain to improve health care for many Oklahomans, particularly our senior citizens, who lack the means to buy much-needed medicines,'' Henry said.

Only prescription drugs in their original sealed packaging are eligible for donation. Expired prescription drugs or controlled dangerous substances may not be accepted.

Participation in the program is voluntary, and the law mandates that rules for the program be established by Dec. 1.
