The University of Tulsa will help develop cleaner cars. TU is one of 17 universities chosen for a national student engineering contest.

It's a three year competition. For the first year, the school gets a grant of $10,000 from General Motors and the US Department of Energy. They will design a hybrid vehicle and present it to GM.

TU assistant professor Christi Patton-Luks: "If they approve, key to equinox, .two years to rip the guts out and rebuild it."

The goal is to reduce energy consumption and cut emissions, while maintaining the performance and utility features of the original vehicle.
