(Oklahoma City-AP) -- Cameras will be installed to monitor traffic conditions on Interstate 44 in Oklahoma City.

The $1.5-million project will place cameras on I-44 from I-240 to the Kilpatrick Turnpike.

State transportation officials say the cameras will help them reroute traffic in case of an accident or disaster. They'll also help when emergency vehicles are needed.

Traffic engineer Alan Stevenson says I-44 has an average of 140,000 vehicles on it each day.
