(Poteau-AP) -- It's taken 14 years, but Rock Island in eastern Oklahoma is now officially a town.
Rock Island residents voted 82-to-1 in 1989 to incorporate, but the LeFlore County Commission had never formally approved the incorporation as required by law.
The Rock Island City Council recently learned of the oversight when they tried to pass ordinances.
County commissioners corrected the oversight Monday night by voting to approve the incorporation.
