(McAlester-AP) -- McAlester's police chief says he plans to retire March 1st.
Chief Dale Nave started working for the city as a meter reader about 40 years ago. He's worked for the police department for all but four or five years of his tenure with the city of McAlester.
He was appointed police chief in 1982.
City Manager Randy Green says that under Nave, the police department went from a mediocre one in terms of equipment and training to one that's among the best.
Nave announced his retirement during a special meeting Thursday that was mandatory for all 67 officers, dispatchers and other personnel.
