A rain delay for construction on the Main Mall, but the city says it won't push back the completion of the project.
News on 6 reporter Emory Bryan, the demolition of the Main Mall took a couple of months - but lately the work appears to have slowed along Main Street.
The contractor hired by the city was off the project Monday - because of the rain. They moved out their big equipment last week. But the city says that's only because the biggest phase of demolition is done - they say the project is on track, on schedule. Albert Martinez Project Engineer: “If the contractor doesn't pursue the project diligently and proceed at a serious rate, he would be charged liquidated damages essentially a breach of contract.â€
One restaurant owner claims the project killed his business. Ike's Chili closed - and the owner says it was because his customers were driven away by the construction. He hopes to reopen downtown eventually.
The Main Street project is set to be done next fall.
