(Bartlesville-AP) -- A Bartlesville man who's serving life in prison for first-degree murder in the death of his wife is asking for a new trial.

Michael Hicks says the jury that convicted him should have been given instructions on lesser offenses of second-degree manslaughter or negligent homicide.

Hicks was convicted of first-degree murder in 2000 for the 1999 death of Merrie Hicks.

Prosecutors say Hicks drove his car off US 75 into Caney River, drowning Merrie Hicks.
