For the second year in a row, the 9-11 anniversary is the day chosen for the Tulsa Area United Way's Day of Caring.

Some 5,000 to 6,000 people volunteered around the city of Tulsa Thursday to help kick off of United Way's annual campaign. The day began with a ceremony at Driller Stadium.

United Way Director Kathleen Coan says volunteers will be at work, despite the rain. "People will be going out doing things like painting, landscaping, helping people who are handicapped with projects that they can't handle themselves. This is all through one of our 68 member agencies."

The United Way has lowered its goal for the first time in many years to just under $23-million.
