(Oklahoma City-AP) -- Oklahoma high school seniors taking the SAT college entrance exam in 2003 scored above the national average, but just 8% of the state's students took the test.

Education officials say most students taking the SAT have an ``A'' average and plan to apply to out-of-state colleges as well as in-state schools. Among the most popular out-of-state schools are Harvard, Yale, Stanford, Duke and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Oklahoma students averaged 569 on the verbal portion and 562 on the math section for a total of 1,131. That's 105 points above the national SAT average.

Most Oklahoma students take the ACT with an average score of 20.5, slightly below the national ACT average of 20.8.
