The "Service Flag" was first displayed in the front windows of homes during World War I as a way to signify a son or husband serving in the Armed Forces.

In World War II, the "Blue Star Mothers" group was formed, and still exists today.

The organization provides support for active duty service personnel and their families.

Here's the info on the first meeting of the Oklahoma Chapter of the Blue Star Mothers:
