(McAlester-AP) -- McAlester schools could be forced to lay off 32 staff members, including 16 teachers, due to demands caused by the state budget shortfall.
Monday night, the school board authorized officials to explore a plan to offer severance packages to some personnel.
The board also approved a plan to help the district cut its budget again.
The district has met budget cuts so far mainly by using funds carried over from previous years. Now many of the carry-over funds have been depleted.
The district has already cut more than $1.2-million from its budget since the spring of 2002.
