(Oklahoma City-AP) -- Oklahoma Gas and Electric Company is moving closer to using one of the state's most abundant resources to generate electricity -- wind.

OG&E asked for proposals yesterday to build a 50-megawatt wind power generator.

The turbines are expected to be in operation by the fall of 2004.

They would augment the utility's electricity generation and provide clean energy to customers who request it.

The wind farm would generate enough electricity to serve more than 15,000 homes.

Customers who opt to buy wind power will pay a surcharge for the delivery of the electricity.

Although Oklahoma is windy, wind is not a consistent source of power. Wind is often still on hot summer days when energy demand is at its peak.
