Tulsa's city government started a new effort Wednesday aimed to educate people about surviving disaster - whether it is terrorism - or a tornado.

News on Six Reporter Emory Bryan says the city wants individuals to plan for the ways a disaster might affect their homes - and their neighborhoods. The mayor wants to have trained volunteers ready to help out emergency crews - and wants families to use this guide to plan for natural - or man made disaster.

The rush is on to print and collate enough preparedness guides for everyone who wants one. Starting Thursday - the guides will be out in QuikTrip stores - and at branches of the library. They're intended to help individuals prepare their homes and families for disaster.

The local guide supplements a new national emphasis on disaster education - unveiled Wednesday on the web site www.ready.gov.

It focuses more on terrorism - and how to protect your family from biological or chemical attack. The local effort pays more attention to the more likely scenario - a natural disaster - such as flooding or tornadoes. The mayor wants a citizen corps to help out in neighborhoods during an emergency.
