TULSA, Okla. (AP) _ Taking top honors at the Oklahoma Press Association Better Newspaper Contest were the Edmond Sun, The Pryor Daily Times and The Broken Arrow Daily Ledger.

These three daily newspapers were among eight named Sequoyah winners Friday night. The Sequoyah award is presented to a newspaper in each division, which is based on circulation numbers, with the greatest number of points in 10 different categories.

In Division 1, the Edmond Sun took home the award after finishing third last year. Last year's winner, The Muskogee Daily Phoenix & Times-Democrat was second, followed by the Norman Transcript.

Out of 10 newspapers entered in Division 2, The Pryor Daily Times received the Sequoyah for the third time. Their other wins came in 1969 and 1988. Finishing second was the Woodward News and the Miami News-Record was third.

Division 3 is for daily newspapers with the smallest circulation. Out of the 10 papers judged, The Broken Arrow Daily Ledger collected the most points to win a Sequoyah. The Oklahoma City Journal Record finished second, followed by The Cushing Daily Citizen.

In Division 4, for weeklies with circulation of 3,000 and above, the Owasso Report took top honors. In Division 5 for weeklies, the Oologah Lake Leader took home a Sequoyah and in Division 6 for weeklies, The Moore American finished in first place.

The Fort Gibson Times received its first Sequoyah Award competing in Division 7. In Division 8 for semi, two or tri-weeklies regardless of circulation, The Sequoyah County Times in Sallisaw took top honors.
