(Tahlequah-AP) -- Granite stones engraved with the names and events that mark the history of the Cherokee Nation have been placed around the tribe's Capitol building.
In 2001, the tribe commissioned 40 granite stones to be placed in a brick sidewalk around historic Cherokee Nation Capital Square in Tahlequah.
The stones continue a tradition started more than one-hundred-50 years ago of teaching the young about their ancestors.
Fifteen stones engraved with the names of each of the principal chiefs of the Cherokee Nation and 15 stones marking historic events have been completed.
The tribe says the remaining ten blocks will be left blank for future Cherokee leaders and accomplishments.
