(Houston-AP) -- Sophomore guard Kevin Gaines and three other Houston Cougars have been suspended after Gaines was arrested in North Carolina yesterday for allegedly assaulting a female.
Coach Ray McCallum says Gaines is suspended for the rest of the season. Senior guard Dominic Smith, junior guard Marcus Oliver and junior forward Louis Truscott will return, but it's not clear when.
The team didn't specify why the players were suspended, only saying a ``violation of team rules was involved.'' McCallum says Smith, Truscott and Oliver must undergo ``administrative program consultation'' before reinstatement.
Greenville, North Carolina, police say the four players were arrested early yesterday near the East Carolina University campus, where Houston lost 63-to-46 Saturday. Police say a woman reported Gaines physically attacked her.
Gaines is confined to the Pitt County Detention Center in Greenville (North Carolina) on five-thousand dollars bond pending arraignment today.
