Oklahoma Governor Frank Keating took aim Tuesday at corporate hog and chicken farms that are blamed for polluting many of the state’s drinking water supplies.
Keating signed an emergency rule blocking the construction of any new poultry operation on the hundred-year flood plain or within 300 feet of any body of moving water. "It's a small part of the solution to fix the water quality problems in Tulsa. We don't have to have every pig and every chicken in Oklahoma because if you have too much, you threaten your water supply."
Keating says he is not against the companies being in Oklahoma. He just wants them to be more sensitive to the environment and their downstream neighbors.
