WASHINGTON (AP) _ An Illinois company is recalling about 156,000 night lights because they can short-circuit and shock or burn consumers.

Intermatic Inc., of Spring Grove, Ill., knows of no injuries and is conducting the recall as a precaution, the Consumer Product Safety Commission said Wednesday.

The Electroluminescent Night Lights have molded on the back ``Intermatic Inc.,'' ``Made in Taiwan'' and the model numbers GN172 or GN165. The lights are gray with two metal electrical prongs.

The GN172 lights are about 1 1/2 inches square by one-quarter inch thick

The GN165 lights are about 4 3/8 inches in height, 1 5/8 inches wide and one-quarter inch thick.

Hardware stores and electrical distributors, including True Value Hardware Stores, sold these lights between January 1999 and December 2001 for about $4.

The government said consumers should stop using the lights and return them to the store where they were purchased for a full refund.

If the lights are plugged in, consumers should turn off the power before removing them, the safety agency said.

Consumers can also contact the company for a refund or replacement by calling toll-free at 1-800-391-4555 between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. CST Monday through Friday.
