KINGFISHER, Okla. (AP) _ Junior backup quarterback Reed James threw for two touchdowns and ran for two more Saturday as Pond Creek defeated Medford 32-6 for the Class C football championship.
James came into the game after senior quarterback Brad Deterding, who led the Panthers to 12 wins this season, injured his knee late in the first quarter. Deterding gave Pond Creek (13-1) a 6-0 lead on a first quarter 1-yard touchdown run.
Medford (11-3) tied the score at the half on Kent Mennem's touchdown run.
Seconds after the third quarter's start, James hit Brent Hendrix for a 70-yard touchdown pass that put Pond Creek ahead for good. James followed it up with a 12-yard touchdown pass to Darrin Schultz and two touchdown runs.
Medford was held to 94 yards rushing and 151 yards passing.
The Panther defense kept Medford from taking the lead with a goal-line stand just before halftime. Medford ran four plays inside the 8-yard line without scoring.
Pond Creek's only other state title came in 1985.
