You won't find many ranchers setting pasture fires in August, but scientists run the show at the Nature Conservancy's Tallgrass Prairie Preserve in Osage County.
And all this week, they've been burning the grass there to mimic a late summer lightning strike. History says lightning and Indian tribes were responsible for fires that kept the American prairie healthy and diverse.
To find out more about the work being done by The Nature Conservancy across Oklahoma, tune in to KOTV, Friday at 7 PM for an Oklahoma Traveler special, "Saving The Last Great Places."
And if you find yourself at a high school football game, you can catch it again Saturday morning at 11.
