The researcher who pinpointed the high rate of cancer among people living near Tri-State Mining district in the 1980s has come back to Tar Creek to discuss what other studies should be conducted.
Doctor John Neuberger met with leaders of the Local Environmental Action Demanded, a local group advocating for environmental cleanup of the area that was once a zinc mine, to discuss ongoing health concerns and additional research.
The area is now on the national list of toxic waste sites. Meanwhile, members of the Tar Creek Basin Steering Committee have asked area residents to stop taking part in studies of the area. The group says it has been the subject of too many unproductive studies.
Steering committee members said parents should, however, continue to have their children tested for elevated blood-lead levels.
