SEATTLE (AP) _ The Boeing Co. announced plans to issue 60-day layoff notices to 1,200 workers Friday as it nears its goal of eliminating 30,000 employees by the end of 2002.
The notices include 1,090 to Puget Sound-area employees and will take effect on Jan. 1.
In addition, notices for 240 people go into effect Friday, bringing the total number of workers cut from the payroll since the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks to 25,640, said Boeing spokesman Bill Cogswell.
Boeing announced last year that with airlines financially hurting from the attacks and a weakened economy, the commercial jet manufacturer would slash production by half and cut as many as 30,000 jobs. Including the new notices and attrition, the company expects to reach its target, Cogswell said.
Boeing might not be done with layoffs. In the company's third-quarter announcement last week, Boeing Chairman Phil Condit said the company will need to cut more jobs. He said the company was unsure whether it would need to issue more layoffs or achieve the cuts through attrition.
