OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) _ A Perkins reserve police officer shot a man to death late Saturday during a chase.
Police identify the dead man as Kenneth Bailey, 22.
Officers say Noble County sheriff's deputies were watching an oil rig when several men drove up the rig at about 10:30 p.m. and tried to steal anhydrous ammonia. The chemical is used to manufacture methamphetamine.
Three men in the car were arrested while a fourth, identified as Bailey, drove away. As officers chased Bailey an unknown distance, the unidentified reserve officer and another officer waiting in front of the pursuit tried to put spikes in the road to damage the car's tires.
Bailey drove around the spikes and the reserve officer fired once, hitting Bailey. Bailey's car crashed into some nearby trees. He was pronounced dead on arrival at a Stillwater hospital.
Kym Koch of the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation said the reserve officer had been with Perkins police less than a month and had not completed training.
