Students from across Oklahoma can win prizes by writing essays that answer the question: "What does the state Capitol dome mean to me and Oklahoma?"

KOTV, KWTV, The Oklahoman and the Tulsa World, in conjunction with the Oklahoma Centennial Commission, are sponsoring the Capitol Dome Essay Contest.

"Oklahoma's new Capitol dome marks the spirit of a new frontier. Our state's future ambassadors have a unique opportunity to express their thoughts on Oklahoma's most historic event in contemporary life," said Blake Wade, executive director of Oklahoma Centennial Commission.

Students who are in grades four through nine and attend public, private, charter or home-based schools can participate in the contest. Winners in each grade level will be announced at a ceremony at the state Capitol in early November.

Teachers and families of the winning students also will be recognized at the ceremony. Prizes from Six Flags and the Oklahoma Centennial Commission will be awarded to winners in each grade, and cash awards from Oklahoma Events will be given to the first, second and third place winners in two overall categories: grades 4-6 and 7-9.

Essays must be submitted on 8 1/2 x 11 inch white paper and not exceed 250 words. Each student is welcomed to attach a drawing and encouraged to submit a school photo.

The deadline for submissions will be Oct. 15. Send essays to "Capitol Dome Essay Contest," Oklahoma Centennial Commission, 133 W Main, Suite 100, Oklahoma City, OK 73102.
